you are on win3.1. Click on the icon below right to download mIRC from the official mIRC

Save it to a directory called c:\mirc or d:\mirc for best results.

The Diagrams below show the installation of mIRC v5.7. Follow the exact same
procedure while
installing this latest version of 5.8
You will have downloaded a file called mIRC58t.exe ( for win95 or NT)
or a file called mirc58s.exe ( for win3.x ). Find this file using Explorer in win95 or
File Manager in win3.x, and run this exe file. Below is a section of what will popup.

|
| |
| Press the button, accept the copyright notice, and then you will
see this:

It will install the mIRC program to the directory c:\mirc or d:\mirc although you will
have the option to change the directory by pressing the button. Once
your directory is set, press the button. |
| This is what appears:
|
| And on completion of that:

You can tick either of the two boxes shown there, to Read the Help file, and/or launch
mIRC immediately (good Idea) and then the button. |
After it is installed a box with this icon in it will pop open. Just double click on the icon
to start up mIRC, or alternatively run the program called mirc32.exe ( win95 ) or
mirc16.exe ( win3.x ) , and the program will open. |
| You will see this box popup in the middle of your screen. Just click
anywhere in that and it will go away. You can untick the box in the bottom left hand
corner to stop the box appearing again. For a bit of fun try clicking on Khaled's nose.

Or for even more fun type the word ARNIE and see what happens to Khaled's Picture!
|
| After clicking on the image above, you will get this:

Now you have to start being a bit creative. First you need to think of a nice bit of
information that you want to display about yourself. You put that in the Full Name field.
Something like "I love to chat and my email is happy@freemail.com". Then you
fill in the E-Mail Address box. Some servers insist you have the real email prefix such as
dumbo if your email is dumbo@emirates.net.ae but with
most servers just put in anything funny without spaces in the word. Next you have to
choose a fictitious Nickname. Think of a nice one here as this is the nickname you will be
known by. For example my nickname is Free. Sometimes your nickname is taken and 2 people
cannot have the exact same nickname, so put in an Alternative nickname. Mine is Free` and
these are the valid characters for a nickname: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789
` ^ - _ ][ }{ | \ There you go. You can't start your nickname with a number and
the maximum length of a nickname is 9 characters in Undernet. Anything else goes. Now next
step is as follows. Click on the image to see how I would have filled up the boxes. |
| Next you choose a chat server to connect to by clicking on the downwards pointing
black triangle to the right
of the IRC Servers: box, and in the box that opens up, scroll down till you see
this appear.

You choose the Undernet Server, and then next: |
Scroll down and choose either the or the servers, though, many of the
others work fine too. The USA based servers tend to give better performance.
European and Canadian servers are often quite slow when connecting from U.A.E.
|
|
Next you put in another identifier that many people use to check if you are the real
you when chatting. It is quite easy to get confused in who you are actually talking to
since nicknames are available to the first user that chooses them. You put in your
Identifier here in the User ID box. Most people put their preferred nickname in this space
but you can put anything else also. Try to limit yourself to 9 characters. Also tick the
two boxes that say
and .Make sure
you leave the System and Listen on port boxes as they are. You must now press the button at the bottom when you finish.
Remember, don't use ChooseName, but change it to something you like. |
|
| |
|
| |
|
Now The top line will look something like this. Click on the 2nd button from the left on the Button Bar. This is the set up
info Box. Click on the image below to see the full screen view if you are interested.
Press the connect button, and watch the screen.
|
| You will see in the Status window:
and you wait patiently until you are connected and this pops up:
|
At the top, you type in #Dubai - then click on the button, and then highlight the newly added
#Dubai nad click on the button.
|
| And voila, you are now in #Dubai's home channel, and this is what the
channel looks like -
|
| |
A bunch of people in the channel there, and all you need to do to join in
is type your line on the bottom line and press the enter key.
